Synchrotron

Big Science

One of my friends at Cornell University works at the synchrotorn. A synchrotron is a cyclic particle accelerator that synchronizes the particle's magnetic and electric fields. He was generous enough to take an afternoon out of his schedule and show me around the massive complex. Cornell is only one of a handful of universities across the country that are blessed with such a large scientific instrument. The facility itself is located beneath the athletic fields here at Cornell.

Hats off to big science!

Remnants of CLEO

Some of the equipment that is stored around the complex actually are leftover parts from previous projects. The giant plates seen in the first photo are remnants of a magnet that was too large to be removed from the facility. Scattered throughout are many projects completed, ongoing, and planned. It is really a neat example of scientific history and science at work!
